Brussels, Belgium, (March 31st, 2006) - The SERENITY project (System Engineering for Security and Dependability) is officially launched. Part of the European Union’s Sixth Research Framework Programme, SERENITY is an Integrated Project that will develop specifications, methods and a suite of tools aimed at providing security and dependability for the future adaptive, service-oriented, context-aware architectures known as Ambient Intelligence environments (AmI).
Ambient intelligence is the idea that before 2010 people will be surrounded by intelligent and intuitive interfaces embedded in everyday objects around us. This environment will recognise and respond to the presence of individuals in an invisible way. It builds on three major concepts : ubiquitous computing, ubiquitous communication and intelligent user interfaces. Defined by the EC Information Society Technologies Advisory Group in a vision of the Information Society, Ambient Intelligence emphasises on greater user-friendliness, more efficient services support, user-empowerment, and support for human interactions.
