Security and dependability in Ambient Intelligence Systems
Currently, the provision of appropriate security and dependability mechanisms for Ambient Intelligence (AmI) ecosystems remains an unsolved issue. SERENITY will create the first practical secure and dependable solution for these heterogeneous and dynamic architectures.
SERENITY R&D teams face one of the most tremendous challenges in the security field : Ambient Intelligence(AmI).

The concept of AmI

Ambient intelligence is the idea that people will be surrounded by intelligent and intuitive interfaces embedded in everyday objects around us and an environment recognising and responding to the presence of individuals in an invisible way. It builds on three major concepts : ubiquitous computing, ubiquitous communication and intelligent user interfaces.
Defined by the EC Information Society Technologies Advisory Group in a vision of the Information Society, Ambient Intelligence emphasises on greater user-friendliness, more efficient services support, user-empowerment, and support for human interactions. In this vision, people will be surrounded by intelligent and intuitive interfaces embedded in everyday objects around us and an environment recognising and responding to the presence of individuals in an invisible way.

AmI, a near future

These AmI ecosystems are not science fiction but about to become reality by 2010. Already, the usage scenarios are multiplying. Business applications move from standalone systems to service oriented architectures, flexibly adapting to changing business processes. Networks of smart devices attached to goods and matter and being able to interact with each other. Networks allow spontaneous communication supporting the nomadic user. Citizens being able to access their administrative records and authoritative processes everywhere and at any time.

The challenge of making AmI secure and dependable
In the AmI context dependability and security are crucial issues. In the Ambient Intelligent environment the personal sphere of individuals will be an open and evolving environment. Privacy is an increasing concern with respect to the latest technical developments in strong identification (biometrics, unique identifiers, etc.), RFID... Economic security, protection of intangible assets and IT investments drive to a growing policy interest on the security of information. Social accountability of security solutions is not guaranteed so far. Because of this combination of heterogeneity, mobility, dynamism, sheer number of devices, along with the growing demands for security and dependability these ecosystems are increasingly difficult to make secure and dependable. SERENITY’s purpose is to solve these issues.

Objectives of SERENITY

To enhance security and dependability in AMI systems, SERENITY will pursue the following objectives :
  • To make validated security solutions available to AmI ecosystems and promote their assurance and evolution.
  • To support the definition of security requirements which arise in different business, private and legal activities in order to enable a requirements-driven selection of appropriate security mechanisms within integration schemes at run-time.
  • To provide mechanisms for monitoring security at run-time and dynamically react to threats or breaches of security, and context changes.
  • To integrate security solutions, requirements definition and solution selection, and monitoring and reaction mechanisms in a common framework.
The results
SERENITY’s objectives will be materialized eventually through these tangible results :
  • A specification that will be necessary to draw the SERENITY framework architecture. Specification Languages to describe security and dependability properties, requirements and solutions in a precise and formal way will be also provided.
  • A series of methods supporting the development of a generic security framework in the context of AmI. These methods will encompass mechanisms for validation, verification, simulation and testing.
  • A suite of software tools supporting the development of the SERENITY solutions. These software tools are given by a suite of integrated means that can support the provision of :
    • Security and dependability patterns and integration schemes to be used and adapted to the specific AmI context ;
    • Security Manager Tool for the dynamic selection, adaptation and integration of security and dependability mechanisms ;
    • Validation and testing tools for the security and dependability patterns and integration Schemes ;
    • Monitoring mechanisms to prevent breaches and malicious attacks ;
    • A library of S&D patterns and Integration Schemes continuously updated ;
  • The results will be driven by the scenarios requirements to make them exploitable.

Issues

The new requirements of AmI systems

The specific characteristics of AmI ecosystems make it almost impossible to adapt and to apply the existing security and dependability solutions. [>>>]

Scenarios

Scenarios validated through 5 case studies

SERENITY will be proofed and evaluated through 5 main scenarios : Communications, Smart items, e-business, e-government and Air Traffic Management. The industrial partners, major players in their respective area of business, will ensure the continuous evolution and extension of their products and their respective security solutions. [>>>]
